Breaking Down Maestros’ Movements

2012 April 6
by Nathan Newbrough

I get this question all the time. “Just what exactly is he doing up there?” … “Does the conductor really matter?”

Today’s New York Times has an interactive feature, breaking down conductors’ movements, with NY Philharmonic music director Alan Gilbert. Every conductor has his or her own personal style. It seems that what matters most is connecting with the musicians to communicate passion and meaning through gesture.

Tonight, and next weekend, you can see our very own Josep Caballé-Domenech conducting the Colorado Springs Philharmonic. See you at the Pikes Peak Center!

In the meantime, you can work on your own conducting style. I recommend starting with Beethoven’s 5th Symphony.

Looks like a great candidate for the next “Battle of the Batons!”
